Secret Mormon Temple Ceremonies

Well since I received 0 responses on my poll as to which topic to blog about next, I made the executive decision and picked one of my favorite topics, Mormon temple ceremonies.
Much of what goes on in Mormon temples is a secret even to the Members, that is until they reach the age (and worthiness) to enter the temple and partake in the ordinances for themselves. Growing up in the church my entire life and being surrounded by Mormon culture I still had no idea what would happen in the temple until the day when I actually went to see for myself. I was 20 yrs old and was just about to leave on my mission. Before you are married or before you leave on a mission you must visit the temple and take out your endowments. This ritual consists of a washing and annointing by a temple worker. First you dress in a white smock, much like a sheet with a hole for your head...you are completely naked underneath and the sides are slit open from the arms down. You first receive a "new name" one which you will use and remember when you reach the angels guarding the kingdom of heaven. You then enter a small room where the washing and annointing takes place. From what I remember you are "blessed" in a way and promised certain blessings for keeping commandments. You are washed of the "sins of this generation" and annointed as a prince or something to that effect, in the kingdom of god. You are then clothed with the sacred Mormon garments that you are required to wear at all times from this point forward in your life. You leave that room and then return to a locker room where you dress in white. The next part of the ritual takes place in a larger room with a group of people. In this part of the ceremony or "session" as it is called. You watch a movie about the creation of the world, the fall of adam and oaths made with god. You are then shown secret signs and handshakes, or tokens and handshakes. These will also come in handy when passing through the sentinels at the gates of the celestial kingdom. Another part of the ceremony is the strange clothing. During the video (orignally it was a live production) you place different particles of clothing. First a green apron to clothe your naked loins. Then a sash. A hat similar to a bakers hat is also worn as well as a robe. During this you make certain promises with god that you will follow certain commandments if you dont you will face death or damnation. (there is a lot of manipulation going on at this point) After watching the movie and being shown and told the secret handshakes and signs and names of the signs you are then instructed to come to the front of the room. There is a curtain across the entire wall of the front of the room. This represents the veil or crossing through into heaven. You approach the veil and knock with a small mallet. A temple worker on the other side of the veil answers and asks you specific questions. You must share your secret name and reach through openings in the veil to exchange the secret handshakes and whisper through the veil the names of the signs and tokens. Once you have completed this the temple worker reaches through and pulls you through the curtains, a symbol of being welcomed into the celestial kingdom. You then are led down a hallway to the celestial room of the temple. A very beautifully decorated room, usually with alot of natural light coming in. Everything is white and very serene. You can then sit and meditate or whatever.
That is my memory of the temple experience. My first impression was.......WHAT THE FUCK AM I GETTING MYSELF INTO? The whole exprerience was soo weird and no-one had ever told me any of these things. Probably because you make an oath that you wont talk about the things to anyone if you do death is a possible consequence. In fact up until the 80's or 90's part of the ceremony was a ritual where you would move your hand across your neck and across your mid section showing the penalty for revealing this information. This was called the blood oath. And the mormons say the aren't a cult!! I dare you to challenge me on the topic. Another interesting fact about mormon temple ceremonies, in the early days of the church late 1800's and early 1900's, there was a part of the ceremony called the oath of vengeance. In this oath you swore to avenge the blood of the saints upon this nation!! Can you believe that? A direct call to action against the government of the United States! And people wonder why Joseph Smith was wanted by the President of the United States for charges of treason.
Well I hope I have shed some light on a subject that not many care to or dare to talk about. The experiences as expressed are to the best of my knowledge/memory there are several parts that I am sure I have left out, i will try to find documentation on the entire ceremony process and post it here.

Rich, I just found your blog today. Just wanted to drop a note to say thanks for posting. I was raised "loosely" Roman Catholic, in that my parents didn't really believe, and they became Catholic for the community. However, I work at a place were 1/3 of my colleagues are Mormon, mostly BYU grads hired by a BYU alum boss. The Mormons at work are extremely nice, honest, hardworking, and fair people (perhaps thanks to the Church's brainwashing?). But for the life of me I can't believe that such logical people (I'm a techie) would take any organized religion so seriously. In one respect I can't complain because the Mormons at work really *are* such nice people, but I feel like sometimes they're part zombie in their niceness, and it makes me feel uncomfortable. I'll find some time to finish reading your entries this week. Just wanted to say thanks. -RC
Wow. I really understand what you mean Reeser as far as "zombie in thier niceness," that is a perfect way to put it. Wish it'd thought of that; it's totally true. Thanks for this information too. I've found some similar. This is pretty plain/easily read; though the other reading is very heavy-- like coffee so strong it's practically sludge-- or something. Thanks. If you find any more info on temple rituals i will be highly interested.

I think you will find a lot of good info here. Sandra Tanner (involved with the lighthouse ministry) is the great great grandaughter of Brigham Young, but no longer believes in the mormon teachings.

I'm glad you posted this! I was raised in the Mormon church my whole life and I stopped going about 3.5 years ago. I've started doing more research and I am so happy I can see through all the brainwashing and whatnot now. I also had NO idea what when on in the Temple, other than baptisms for the dead.
Rich: Brigham Young sent two elders armed with small caliber hand guns to murder Joseph Smith, Jr. and his brother, Hyrum. Joseph Smith was going to bring Young before an elders court over advocating polygamy. Evaluation of bullet trajectories by a member of the Smith family knowledgeable in ballistics observed that according to angle of entry in the Carthage, Illinois, jail cell wall, no bullets had entered through the one window or from the one door nor had any rifle bullets been fired. Regardless what garbage you drum up to discredit "Mormons" as people, I am a MISSOURI Mormon, not a Utah Brighamite, raised in Presbyterian persuasion, the Book of Mormon is valid. To my astonishment I discovered came to realize if the Book of Mormon were invalid, there would never have been a Presbyterian church, a Roman church or any other denomination in existence. Why? Both people and events which transpired in the Northeastern sector of what is now the United States laid basis for creating the early Christian church. Essential figures at play here are Nephi, son of Helaman, his brother, Lehi and Samuel, a dark skinned prophet. Nephi became a primary mover and shaker behind the scenes in New Testament events. Nephi, a Jewish high priest and chief judge among his own people traveled to Nazareth, anointed Jesus king and ordained him high priest. Nephi also commissioned John the Baptist to baptize because Nephi himself dared not baptize in Palestine due to conflict with King Herod. Nephi is why the apostle Paul went down into Arabia. Paul did not believe Ananias after Paul received his sight by administration from Ananias. Ananias must have told Paul that Nephi anointed Jesus king and ordained him high priest. So Paul went into Arabia to hear from the horses mouth. Paul was convinced after meeting Nephi. After Paul returned from Arabia, he wrote Hebrews, information that only could have come from the individual responsible for ordaining Jesus high priest. Having been personally visited by Jesus and then talking with the individual who ordained Jesus high priest and anointed Jesus king, caused Paul to be revolutionized. And he proceeded to do the same thing to the Roman Empire.
During Jesus' crucifixion a powerful earthquake shook loose a stone from the lintel above the great curtain in Herod's temple behind which the Ark of the Covenant was supposed to be located, rending the curtain asunder, exposing an empty room. Local Jewish worshipers were horrified to discover in actuality no Ark of the Covenant was in the Holy of Holies. Jews began rioting. Rumor soon spread that Christians had stolen the Ark as reprisal against Jews having crucified Jesus. Riots in Jerusalem turned to exterminating Christians out of bitter hatred over suspicion Christians stole the Ark. Eventually Rome sent an army to quell the rioting which ended in Herod's temple being destroyed. Suspicion of Christians stealing the Ark of the Covenant is why Paul was on the road to Damascus hunting Christians, not Damascus in Syria, but a Nazarene stronghold called by that name publically as protective measure.
Actually the Ark of the Covenant had been removed by Jeremiah c. 588 B.C. just before Jerusalem was destroyed by Babylon. Jeremiah hid the ark in a cave beneath Golgotha. When Jesus was speared by a Roman soldier, Jesus' blood seeped down through a crack in the cave ceiling and dripped onto the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant. Flyboy 66 said... The Mormon or LDS Temple rituals are part of the first 3 degrees of freemasonry. Joseph Smith the founder of this church chose to reveal his masonic lodge teachings to the general population of the church when he promised a revelation. He did it and then claimed mormonism was true masonry. The signs, handshakes and rituals are modified in some cases from the actual masonic works but never the less the mormon religion stole the masonic lodge lock stock and barrel. Freemasons believe in the fall of man (Adam) and his restoration on earth through degrees eventually leading to a celestial city and this is identical to church dogma. Flyboy66
